Reading the completed objectives heatmap on your Team Dashboard

The Completed Objectives heatmap shows, month by month, how your team's finished objectives were rated by their reviewers.

Your Team Dashboard can show a heatmap of the objectives your team has finished and how they were rated. It answers a question a list cannot: are we finishing things, and are the people who review them happy with the result? This guide is for managers.

Where to find it

Open Team Dashboard under My Team in the left navigation. If your organization uses objectives, scroll past your team list to the section headed Completed Objectives. The heatmap is part of the classic Team Dashboard layout; if your dashboard does not show this section, your organization uses the newer layout, which does not include it.

How to read it

  • Columns are months, January to December, by the month each objective was completed.
  • Rows are review ratings: Far Exceeds, Exceeds, Meets, Partially Satisfactory and Not Satisfactory, top to bottom.
  • Each number is a count of reviews given in that month at that rating. Hover a cell to see it spelled out.
  • Color ranks the ratings within each month: the darkest blue is that month's most common rating, and the shades lighten as ratings get rarer.

Only reviews from people other than the objective's owner are counted. An owner's view of their own work does not move the map.

Focus on some of your team

Above the grid, every team member has a checkbox, all checked to start. Uncheck people to see the map for the rest. This is useful for comparing a sub-team, or for seeing one person's pattern before a 1:1.

Show percentages

Check Show Percentages below the grid to switch each cell from a count to its share of that month's reviews. Use counts to see volume and percentages to compare months fairly when one month had far more completions than another.

What to look for

  • Empty months. Nothing finished. Check whether objectives are stuck in Awaiting Review on the Objectives board.
  • Ratings drifting down. Worth a conversation with the owners and the stakeholders who reviewed them.
  • Everything at Meets Expectations. Fine, but ask whether the objectives were ambitious enough. How to write good objectives helps.
